The trout rivers

The Suir

The Suir is Irelands’ second longest river and world famous for its dry fly fishing. It is a wide (30m/100ft) limestone river/spring creek flowing for 114 miles to the sea at Waterford port. The river has easy access and  wading is a pleasure on it’s level gravel bottom . Average size is from 20 to 40 cm,  with larger fish up 55 cm not uncommon.

The Nire

The Nire is a gin clear spate/freestone river flowing from the Comeragh Mountains through the Nire Valley until its confluence with the river Suir. It  Is a narrow river (12 m/35 ft) with a ripple and pool formation. Access is easy/moderate, the wading is over moderate sized rocks.

The Tar

The Tar is a lime stone river similar to English chalk streams. A wide (45 ft/15 m), shallow river, with a healthy growth of flowering ranunculus. The bottom is level, making wading easy. It is noted for its remarkable dry fly fishing due to the shallow nature of the river. The river has a good stock of fish from 20 to 30 cm as well as some much larger fish up to 45 cm

Saltwater fishing

Wexford is one of Ireland’s the top locations for Saltwater Fishing, offering Bass, Seat Trout, Pollack and Mullet, all of which are accessible to the fly and lure fisherman.

You can fish from shore or by boat, chasing the tides amongst diving terns and peeping otters, where the surface explodes as a big sea bass hits your fly, misses, then hits it again and you experience that surge of adrenaline that makes you want to fish forever.  It’s a magical place for a magical experience.
