Lozere

The Fishing

The department of Lozere can be categorized as four departments. North are the untamed moors and wild-flower Prairiesof the Aubrac and Margerideplateaus South east, the rolling pastoral beauty of Cevennes.  And running east to west, the dramatic gorges of the Tarn the LotandtheJontecleave the region in two. Each department offers wonderfully diverse habitats for theTrout and Fly, plus Grayling and Barbel.

Trout fishing in Lozere can be challenging due to the wild nature of the fish. In general it is not trophy trout country but there are many possibilities for 18-24 inch fish. (average around 8-14 inches)

Lozere’s pleasure lies in the hunting of truly wild fish in magnificent scenery - and your challenge lies in catching them. There are also a few selected stretches stocked with Rainbow for the less experienced.

The Guides

To help all levels of experience we incorporate at least one day’s guided fishing into all our packages, essential to get you used to local techniques – and all our guides are English speaking. Make full use of their years of experience to enrich your own.

The Rivers

Below is a small selection of rivers from Lozere’s 2,700 kms of waters:

The Bess

The Bess begins at an altitude of 1400 metres gathering strength from it's passage between basalt and granite obstructions, then calmed by Wetlands tumbles to a deep gorge on the edge of the plateau

at this point the Bess is peat stained, broadish, calm and predisposed to the fly. The 3 kilometre 'fly only' stretch above the thermal resort of Aumont offers waters rich in aquatic life and a fine population of fighting wild browns.

The L'Alignon

Our recommended stretch on the L’Alignon is less than a kilometre upstream of it's confluence with the high Tarn . Secreted at the bottom of a small Mountain Gorge beneath a leafy canopy, its Granite and Chalk filtered waters have incredible clarity and produce a rich diversity of insect life for the trout.

This is Stalking country where the trout can grow to a handsome size - needless to say they're extremely savvy.

The High Lot

This is a stretch of the High Lot where the delightful stream winds it's way through the pretty spar resort of Saline les Bains. But you're secreted from public view beneath a magical, leafy canopy.

The waters here are gravel based and gin clear, with a rich population of insect life to fatten the feisty, mountain trout. Also a good place for the less experienced.

The Tarn

The Tarn is one of the jewels in Lozere's crown and this particular stretch of the Upper Tarn (in the lee of wonderful Chateau la Caze) is one of the most revered fishing spots in the whole of Lozere.

At the mouth of the spectacular Tarn Gorge, the waters at La Caze take on an eerie almost luminous opalescence in early morning light adding a wonderful sense of mystery to the scene.

The Jonte

Set in the beautiful department of Cevennes, the Jonte Gorge is another Lozerian area of outstanding natural beauty and famed for its Trout fishing.

On the Jonte’s passage through the gorge, it offers close on 40kms of (mostly) accessible crystal clear free stone waters with challenging and exciting fishing. This is area when a guide’s service is indispensable for a successful day.

The Colange

The Colagne starts high in the Aubrac plateau then meanders gently through woodland on its journey to join the Lot at Ajustons.

This is a delightful intimate river similar in character to English chalk streams. Very good river for the dry fly, kind to the less experienced and sometimes produce sizable fish.
